Acupuncture FAQ's

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for thousands of years. It involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to help balance the flow of energy, known as “Qi” (pronounced “chee”).

When Qi is blocked or unbalanced, it can cause pain, illness, or emotional distress. Acupuncture works to restore this balance, promoting healing and well-being.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

Many people worry that acupuncture might hurt because it involves needles. However, the needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections.

Most patients feel little to no pain when the needles are inserted. Some describe it as a tingling sensation or a mild dull ache, which usually fades quickly. The goal is always comfort and relaxation.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, which are connected to pathways called meridians. These meridians correspond to different organs and systems in the body. By inserting needles into these points, we can regulate the flow of Qi.

It may sound simple, but this process has profound effects on the body’s internal systems.

What can I Expect During an Acupuncture Session?

If you’re new to acupuncture, your first session might feel a little mysterious. Typically, the session starts with a discussion about your health concerns, followed by a physical assessment.

Once the treatment begins, you’ll lie comfortably while fine needles are gently inserted into specific points. Most people find acupuncture deeply relaxing and often feel a sense of calm or relief during and after their treatment.

What are the five elements?

In Five Element Acupuncture, we focus on the interplay between five natural elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of these elements represents different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health.

When one element is out of balance, it can affect your whole system. Acupuncture helps to correct these imbalances by targeting the specific elements in need, encouraging harmony in body, mind, and spirit.

How Can Acupuncture Help Me?

Acupuncture is used to address a wide range of conditions and even emotional imbalances like anxiety and depression. It’s also great for preventative care.

Whether you’re dealing with a specific issue or simply looking to enhance your overall well-being, acupuncture offers a natural and holistic approach to health.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

Five Element Acupuncture, can help with a whole range of conditions as it looks to help with the root of imbalances within someone.

The current NHS (NICE) guidelines state it is beneficial for chronic (long-term) pain, chronic tension-type headaches, migraines, prostatitis symptoms (enlarged prostate).

Why is acupuncture seen as holistic?

The Five Element theory is deeply connected to nature. Just as seasons change and ecosystems must maintain balance, our bodies and minds are influenced by natural cycles.

Acupuncture helps realign us with these natural rhythms, enhancing our resilience to stress, illness, and emotional challenges. By addressing the underlying imbalances, we can restore the flow of Qi and achieve harmony.
